PERANCANGAN HURUF DISPLAY BERGAYA TIPOGRAFI VERNAKULAR WARUNG MAKAN PECEL LELE

Abstract

Indonesia, with its cultural diversity, holds unique potential in the field of Visual Communication Design, particularly in vernacular typography. Typographically, it refers to the art and technique of arranging letters, while 'vernacular,' in the context of linguistics, refers to the use of everyday language by specific groups or during particular periods. In the realm of design, vernacular typography refers to the use of letterforms that develop organically in the daily lives of urban communities, often created by individuals operating outside professional design norms (Steven Heller & Christine Thompson). This study focuses on the phenomenon of street food banners, especially those of pecel lele vendors, which have become iconic with a strong identity through their vernacular typography and vibrant colors. Inspired by the commentary in the book 'Terra-Incognita' (Aulia Akbar), which criticizes the lack of archives and innovation in the local typeface scene, this research aims to document and enhance appreciation for these familiar yet rarely highlighted aspects of pop culture. Furthermore, the results of the display typeface design inspired by pecel lele banners are expected to be directly implemented by banner makers and more widely adapted in various media.

Abstrak
Indonesia, dengan keberagaman budayanya, menyimpan potensi unik dalam ranah keilmuan Desain Komunikasi Visual, khususnya dalam tipografi vernakular. Secara bahasa, tipografi mengacu pada seni dan teknik menyusun huruf, sedangkan vernakular, dalam konteks ilmu bahasa, merujuk pada penggunaan bahasa sehari-hari oleh kelompok tertentu atau dalam periode tertentu. Dalam dunia desain, tipografi vernakular merujuk pada penggunaan karakter huruf yang berkembang secara organik dalam kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat urban, di mana para pelakunya sering kali beroperasi di luar norma desain profesional (Steven Heller & Christine Thompson). Studi ini memfokuskan pada fenomena spanduk makanan malam kaki lima, khususnya pecel lele, yang telah menjadi ikonik dengan identitas yang kuat melalui tipografi vernakularnya dan penggunaan warna-warna mencolok. Terinspirasi oleh komentar dalam buku 'Terra-Incognita' (Aulia Akbar) yang mengkritik minimnya arsip dan inovasi dalam skena typeface lokal, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendokumentasikan dan meningkatkan apresiasi terhadap aspek budaya pop yang familiar namun jarang ditonjolkan. Selanjutnya, hasil dari desain huruf display yang terinspirasi dari spanduk pecel lele diharapkan dapat langsung diimplementasikan oleh pembuat spanduk serta diadaptasi lebih luas dalam berbagai media.
