Abstract

In this research, researchers are trying to raise enough awareness towards vernacular typography, letters that often found painted on streed food stalls that is used as an identity for their business or even culinary which interconnects all of it with the local urban culture. Unfortunately, vernacular typography often overlooked and underappreciated by people even with its ubiquitous presence all over the city, the lack of appreciation upon this particular art form almost feels like a disrespect towards the big of an impact it has on lower class people especially the street vendor communities. This research offers a different approach from similar research with the use of phenomenology methods. A quantitative research with the use of forms has also been done and received 104 responses, which 95,2% of the respondents claiming they often observed the vernacular letters in street vendor’s signs and banners. Interviews with street food vendors and vernacular letterers has also been done, which tells researchers in most cases all of the design elements in their banners or signs are their ideas. The main output of this research is a photo essay book that depicts vernacular typography and its versatility as an identity of the street vendor’s heritage and origins.

ABSTRAK
Pada penelitian ini peneliti membahas atau mengangkat persoalan mengenai tipografi vernakular serta kuliner kaki lima di Kota Bandung, huruf-huruf yang disusun menjadi identitas toko atau kuliner, yang terhubung dengan budaya urban di suatu tempat. Tampilan ini seringkali luput dari perhatian, padahal tipografi vernakular selalu ada di lingkungan kita dan bahkan memiliki pengaruh besar terhadap komunitas pedagang kaki lima. Penelitian ini berbeda dengan penelitian serupa karena menggunakan pendekatan fenomenologi. Dari penyebaran kuesioner terhadap 104 responden, 95,2% menyatakan sering memperhatikan tampilan huruf pada gerobak atau spanduk penjual. Sedangkan berdasarkan wawancara terhadap penjual dan pembuat spanduk, dihasilkan bahwa desain diserahkan pada pemesan spanduk. Hasil akhir dari penelitian ini merupakan buku esai foto yang membahas etimologi dan terminologi dari huruf vernakular itu sendiri menggambarkan bagaimana tipografi vernakular dapat disajikan dan dipertemukan dengan jajanan kuliner. Penampilan visual ini pun menjadi identitas makanan yang dijual dan juga asal dari pedagang tersebut.
